International Projects

Mannkind Charitable Society is at work all over the world!

Our international projects and programs are an exciting part of our mission mandate and an incredible opportunity for our members and volunteers to travel and experience the world and the people around them.  These wonderful projects and programs only become possible when people come together and work in partnership.

Mannkind’s dedicated community of members, partners and donors continue to provide strong financial and volunteer support for our international projects.  Mannkind’s mission abroad is to reach out and transform lives through healthcare projects and education improvement programs.  Our mission abroad also aims to create more appreciation of the environment and so we sponsor urban green-space development by planting trees along major roadways to restore a measure of balance and harmony within local eco-systems.

International Projects:

Mannkind Charitable Society supports field-missions for Operation Rainbow Canada (ORC) medical teams.  We raise support for these projects by encouraging our donors to support ORC projects through our annual fundraising galas and by providing on-the-ground volunteers.  Mannkind’s contributions allow the dedicated ORC doctors & nurses to perform at their peak so they can save and transform more lives.

These medical support projects open new paths of possibility for physically and economically disadvantaged people to reconnect with their families and community. The contributions over our members and volunteers is part of the process that rebuilds their self-esteem, strengthens their dignity and instills hope for the future.

Mannkind provided on-site volunteers and financial support for two medical missions to Akal Charitable Hospital (ACH).  The ACH medical facility is a fully functional hospital with 250 beds, serving over 150 patients daily.

This modern, community-oriented facility located at Baru Sahib in Himachal Pradesh, India provides in-kind medical services for the economically disadvantaged people throughout this remote region.

International tree-planting projects:

Mannkind directors and members take the mission with us wherever we go!  We believe investing in community tree-planting programs in developing countries will increasing public appreciation for the natural environmental.

While in northern India our directors and volunteers noticed a significant lack of trees along major road ways in Punjab province.  This meant that traffic, foot-passengers and pilgrims to the Golden Temple had very little shade and natural vegetation to rely on during their travels.  It also meant that local wildlife and natural eco-systems were imbalanced.  So we decided to get involved and begin a program to plant trees along major road ways in India.

Tree-planting in India:

On the road to the Golden Temple (Jalandhar/Amritsar Highway), Mannkind tree-planting projects are taking root in partnership with the Nishan-E-Sikihi Charitable Trust in (Khadur Sahib) Punjab, India.

In 2009 we made a three year commitment and planted 2,000 trees with 2,000 protective cages. After three years the trees will be strong enough to grow on their own and in 2012 we will we plant another 2,000 trees and be able to re-use the custom protective cages.

International Orphan Care and Education Projects:

The Good Life Centre: was established in 1996 and is a registered charitable organisation recongnized by Tamilnadu goverment.  The center runs a care facility for mentally challenged children and orphans with support from a dedicated, selfless team of volunteers, teachers and caretakers.

Here’s a quick peak at life for the children at the Good Life Centre Orphanage:

  • Investment 2010-12: $7,500 each year for tuition, school uniforms, supplies and music & dance programs.
  • Students: 81

Balagurukulam Orphanage: this care facility looks after orphans and abandoned children, providing them with food, clothing, shelter and education.  Children cared for here also practice yoga, meditation and undergo regular health check-ups to keep them fit, strong and healthy. Balagurukulam’s mission is to up bring these less fortunate children into a divine, supportive environment, while instilling good discipline so they can develop into productive citizens.

  • Investment 2011-2012: $40,000 -site re-development: building a second story with 4 additional rooms so that 54 male and female children of various age groups can have more space and privacy, and so the caretakers have more working space downstairs.

Here’s a great video overview of life for the children at the Balagurukulam Orphanage and some footage of the on-going construction project sponsored by Mannkind:

International Partnerships:

Our international projects also give Mannkind volunteers amazing opportunities to work with Operation Rainbow Canada medical teams all over the world.  Here’s Mannkind volunteer Ravi Mann sharing his experience as an international volunteer on an ORC trip:
